Navigating Perimenopause + Menopause: A Handful of Ingredients for Healthy Skin

Navigating Perimenopause + Menopause: A Handful of Ingredients for Healthy Skin
Perimenopause usually begins in a woman's 40s with the average age of menopause beginning in the early 50s.  Hormonal changes can cause symptoms like hot flashes, trouble sleeping and concentrating, mood swings and dryness. One hormone that begins to decrease is estrogen, which affects skin health by making it thinner and less elastic.

As estrogen levels drop, skin becomes drier, more prone to wrinkles and may lose its firmness and glow. To address these changes, it's important to prioritize age-supporting care and use skincare products that deeply hydrate, moisturize and deliver nutrients where they need to go.  Fortunately there are a plethora of high performance extracts and natural active ingredients capable of visibly enhancing the skin.

Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, a substance found in your eyes, joints and skin to hydrate, tighten and keep skin moist and supple.
Squalane is also important as it is an oily molecule that occurs naturally in the sebum of human skin.  With age, the skin’s natural production begins to decline, making products with squalane more valuable as it supports water retention, offers enhanced elasticity and resilience.
To stimulate collagen and elastin production, consider using products with retinoids, peptides and vitamin C. These ingredients also help hold and release moisture, improve skin firmness and brightness.

Additionally, ingredients like niacinamide, a type of vitamin B3 strengthens the skin barrier, smooths wrinkles and the appearance of fine lines.  It's also known to minimize pores, reduce moisture loss and improve appearance of photo-aged skin as it is a lightening and brightening agent.
Antioxidants such as vitamin E and rosemary extract are also photo-protectors, helping to prevent sun damage and protect the skin from environmental stressors and inflammation.

These are just some of the many beneficial ingredients out there that can help keep your skin healthy and radiant throughout the transformative phases of life.   Remember to consult with a skincare professional for personalized advice based on your skin's needs and preferences.
